Airbnb asks for your email before you can message a host, save a listing, or book a stay. If you are just browsing places for a future trip, you do not need to hand over your primary address yet.
A temporary email address lets you create an Airbnb account, save listings to a wishlist, and message hosts. Once your trip is planned—or if you decide not to go—the inbox can disappear.
When it makes sense
Use a temp address when you are:
- Browsing rentals early. You are not booking yet, just comparing prices.
- Messaging one host. Ask a question about a listing without giving your real email.
- Testing the app. See how Airbnb works before you commit.
When it does not
Airbnb involves money, identity verification, and reviews. If you book a stay, you need a recoverable account. A temp inbox cannot receive payment confirmations, refund receipts, or password resets months later. Hosts and guests also need to trust each other, and a disposable address looks suspicious.
If you are actually traveling, use your real email or a dedicated alias you control.
The routine
- Open a temp inbox.
- Sign up on Airbnb. Verify the email.
- Save listings, message hosts.
- If you book, change the email. Go to account settings and replace the temp address with your real one before you pay.
- If you do not book, delete the mailbox.
Airbnb is a high-stakes service—money, homes, personal safety. Use a temp address to look, but switch to your real address before you commit.
