eBay asks for your email before you can bid, buy, or sell anything. If you are just checking prices or browsing a listing, you do not need to hand over your primary address yet.
A temporary email address lets you create an eBay account, watch items, and message sellers. When you are done shopping, the inbox can disappear.
When it works
Use a temp address when:
- You are comparison shopping. Check prices across sellers without committing.
- You are buying once. A single item, one payment, no return expected.
- You are messaging a seller. Ask about an item before you decide.
When it does not
eBay involves money, shipping addresses, and buyer/seller protection. A temp inbox cannot receive:
- Payment confirmations and receipts.
- Shipping and tracking updates.
- Refund notifications.
- Password resets if you need to recover your account.
If you are actually buying or selling, use your real email. A temp address looks suspicious to sellers and can complicate disputes.
Steps
- Open a temp inbox.
- Sign up on eBay. Verify the code.
- Browse, watch items, message sellers.
- If you buy, change the email. Replace the temp address with your real one in account settings.
- If you do not buy, delete the mailbox.
eBay is a marketplace, not a browse-only site. Use a temp address to look, but switch to your real address before you transact.
