Why Telegram Asks for Your Phone Number
Telegram requires a phone number to create an account — there's no email-only signup. However, you can still use a temporary email address for account recovery notifications and to keep your real email off Telegram's servers.
Step-by-Step: Use Temp Mail with Telegram
Step 1: Generate a Temp Address
Open Temp Mail and create a new address. Keep the tab open.
Step 2: Sign Up with a Phone Number
Open Telegram and enter a phone number to receive the SMS verification code. (You'll need a real phone number for this step — temp mail can't receive SMS.)
Step 3: Add Your Temp Email for Recovery
In Telegram Settings, go to Privacy and Security > Email. Add your temp email address. Telegram will send a confirmation code — check your Temp Mail inbox and enter it.
Step 4: Use Telegram Anonymously
Your Telegram account is linked to your phone number, but your recovery email is temporary. If you ever need to reset your Telegram password, the code goes to your temp inbox.
Limitations
- Phone number required: Telegram doesn't offer email-only signup. You need a phone number regardless.
- Phone number visibility: Your phone number may be visible to people in your contacts who have your number saved.
- Password reset: If you delete the temp inbox, you can't recover your Telegram account through email.
Best Use Cases
- Separate Telegram accounts for different purposes
- Keeping your real email off Telegram's servers
- Temporary accounts for group research
- Testing Telegram bots
